Cosplay is a subculture because people are dressing up in costumes as fictional characters, which allow them to escape the reality of who they are in real life. This group is definitely breaking away from mainstream of society. It's not the norm to go to Target in a Cat Woman suit, unless it's Halloween. They probably get a lot of strange looks and faces directed towards them.
To me, it seems like people are mostly dressing up as sci-fi characters, so I feel like people who are really into sci-fi would find this appealing.
Some conclusions I've drawn about this group is that they're sci-fi fanatics, maybe they're looking for attention, that this is an expensive subculture to have to buy materials for costumes all the time, maybe these people are looking to escape reality for whatever reason by pretending to be a fictional characters, and so on.
