I think it's so wild that adults use to gather around and listen to each other read books, as if it was some cherished act. I feel like that would never happen today. It's so true that the way we read today is very de-socialized. People are almost scared to read aloud today; they would rather keep to themselves. I see this often in college classes. Most of my peers just look down and don't make eye contact with the professor when he/she asks someone to read a section aloud. They're thinking to themselves, "Please don't pick on me to read, please don't pick on me." I actually don't mind reading aloud.
I think reading aloud makes the text come alive. Bringing voice to the text is bringing life to the text. I always find it way more interesting to listen to some one read, even if it's myself, than reading quietly to myself. It just gives it a different feel. Although, there are those that read an entire passage in a terrible, monotone voice and I can't stand that. At that point, I would probably rather just read it to myself. I think if you're going to read something aloud, you have to totally devote yourself to the text. Try reading the text how it was meant to be read. (powerful, distraught, angry, upset, etc.)
